International sports arbitration shares many characteristics with other forms of international arbitration. However, over the years, it has developed its own distinctive features, which are tailored to the specific needs of the sports industry and its users. This article provides an overview of the salient features of international sports arbitration before identifying the potential lessons to be learned from the settlement by international arbitration of sports-related disputes. In doing so, it focuses on arbitration at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as well as those lessons that can transcend contextual limits.
